Genes Can Predict Male Pattern Baldness
October 15, 2008
Researchers have found two genes that together can increase the risk of male pattern baldness sevenfold. Scientists have long known that the androgen receptor gene located on the X chromosome is connected to male baldness, but they have only just identified a region of chromosome 20 that is also linked to hair loss. While the X chromosome is inherited from the mother, chromosome 20 is inherited from both parents. This finding may help explain why some men exhibit the same hair loss patterns as their fathers. Genetic tests could identify those at risk of losing their hair and allow scientists to develop treatments that target the genetic causes of baldness.
