His Masnavi-ye Manavi is a six-volume poem regarded by many Sufis as second in importance only to the Qur’an and is often called “Qur’an-e Farsee,” meaning “The Persian Qur’an.” Rumi’s influence spread to Persian-speakers in Afghanistan, central Asia, Turkey, and beyond. First Photos Taken of a Giant Squid in the Wild
September 30, 2008
In 2004, two teams of Japanese researchers traveled to a sperm whale hunting ground 600 miles south of Tokyo, where they attached bait, a camera, and a flash to a 3,000-foot line. After numerous attempts to lure their prey, a 26-foot giant squid attacked and became entangled in the lure, finally breaking free after more than 500 photos were taken over a four-hour period. What did the photos—the first ever taken of a live giant squid in its natural habitat—reveal about the mysterious creature?

The Phoenix Program
September 30, 2008
Coordinated with South Vietnam’s security network during the Vietnam War, the Phoenix Program was a military and intelligence program designed by the US Central Intelligence Agency to “neutralize”—via capture or assassination—the insurgency’s civilian support infrastructure, which included between 70,000 and 100,000 civilians in 1967. Although some saw it as a success, the program is widely criticized as an “assassination campaign.” How many people were “neutralized” during the program?

Discovered on the eastern shore of Canada’s Hudson Bay in northern Quebec, the 4 square mile (10 square km) tract of pinkish bedrock may actually be a remnant of Earth’s primordial crust, formed as the planet cooled in the wake of the solar system’s creation. Scientists hope the rocks will help them learn about ocean formation on Earth, what temperatures were like at the time, and even about the origins of life on the planet.
