The Mars chocolate company is teaming up with the US Department of Agriculture and computer giant IBM to safeguard the world’s chocolate supply. By mapping the genome of the cacao tree, whose seeds are used to produce cocoa and chocolate, they hope uncover the secret to making cacao crops more resistant to pests, disease, and water shortages, thereby ensuring the future of the cacao plant in a warming climate. The project should take about 5 years to complete, and all data will be made available in a public database at no charge to users.
